The mail list server software we use is Mailman - the community of Mailman users has developed a more complete list of frequently asked questions.
No. Absolutely Not. Never.
One small caveat - We've taken the steps we can to ensure that addresses in our lists are secure, and to prevent their being harvested by web-scanning programs. So far those steps have been effective. There is always the possibility that at some time in the future some hacker or harvester will defeat our countermeasures and your address will be stolen from us, but we won't ever give it to anyone.
Go to the List Information page.
You can do this on the web page for the list. From the list of lists page , click on the name of the list you want to join. On the page that appears you can enter your e-mail address under the Subscribing to listname section.
There are some special lists that you cannot join directly. The school-wide lists for CCHS and CMS are composed by merging all of the class lists for the school; you do not need to (and cannot) join or leave them directly - only by changing your subscription to the class lists.
There are two ways of doing this: through the web or by sending an e-mail.
Start by going to the web page for the list. Either follow the instructions in How do I join/subscribe to a list? or, if you still have an e-mail message that was sent via the list, it will probably have a link to the list page at the bottom of the message.
Once you have loaded the web page for the list, go to the bottom of the page and enter your e-mail address next to the [Unsubscribe or edit options] button. On the next page that appears, click on the [Unsubscribe] button.
Send an e-mail message to the address
listname-request@lists.ptg-concord.org with the word unsubscribe in the subject or body of the message. If you cannot still use the old address, just subscribe using the new one - the old subscription will eventually be cancelled when we get reports that delivery is failing.
If you can use the old address, go to the web page for the list (see How do I leave/unsubscribe from a list?). Go to the bottom of the page and enter your e-mail address next to the [Unsubscribe or edit options] button. If you know your password, enter it at the top of the page and press the [Log in] button. If you don't remember your password, press the Remind button and it will be mailed to you. Once you are logged in, the screen will include a field to enter your new address (you can check the box to make the same change on all of our lists at once).Go to the web page for the list (see How do I leave/unsubscribe from a list?). If the list is archived there will be link to it at near the top of the page. If the archive is private (i.e. restricted to members of the list) then you will need to enter your list password (not your main password you use for logging into e-mail or your computer). If you do not know your password, see How do I find out my password?).

(If you do not know your current password for the list click on the [Remind] button in the Password reminder section. Your password will then be e-mailed to you.)
After logging in, the configuration page showing your settings for this list will be displayed. About a third of the way down, on the right-hand side, you should see a Change your password section. You will need to enter your current password and then the new one. Never change your Mailman password to match your main password (the one you use to login to your computer and access e-mail). If you want to have the same password for all the Mailman lists you are subscribed to, tick the Change globally box before clicking on the [Change my password] button.
Follow the instructions in How do I change my password? remembering to tick the Change globally option.
If you want to send an e-mail message to the list owner (perhaps to find out more about the list before joining) then send an e-mail message to
listname-owner(at)lists.ptg-concord.orgThe list cchs(at)lists.ptg-concord.org list is special. Its' subscription list is created by merging the subscription lists for all 4 of the cchs-class(at)lists.ptg-concord.org lists. If you subscribe to any class list, you are automatically subscribed to the school-wide list; if you unsubscribe from all class lists, then you are automatically unsubscribed from the school-wide list. You cannot subscribe directly to just the cchs school-wide list; you must subscribe by joining at least one class list.
It's to help fight unsolicited bulk email (spam). Unfortunately, there are programs constantly scanning web sites looking for email addresses to add to bulk mailing lists. Putting an email address on a web site is a sure-fire way to start getting lots of junk mail at that address (amazingly quickly). Fortunately, those programs aren't all that clever, and this simple substitution seems (for now at least) to fool them.
We don't know what it is about our mail that AOL filters don't like, but here's what we know about how to fix it:
In order to ensure delivery, you'll need to access your SPAM folder and select 'this is not spam' which will send the newsletters back into your new mail folder. If you are an AOL 9.0 user, you can access your SPAM folder directly with your email, and this is all you have to do..
If you use an earlier version, hit the KEYWORD button (top right corner of your screen, just above buddy list) and type in the word SPAM. This brings you to a screen entitled AOL Spamfighters. In the right column, half way down is an orange button which reads GO THERE NOW. Click that. The next screen is Mail and Spam Control. In the right hand column, click on CLICK HERE TO ACCESS YOUR SPAM FOLDER. This will bring you to your email that AOL has determined is junk. Click on a list message to highlight it and then click THIS IS NOT SPAM.
That should send them to your new mail folder and take the list address off of your SPAM list. If you are on more than one of our lists, you may need to repeat this process for a message from each list.
If all else fails, there's a button in the top right corner of the Mail and Spam Control screen that says HELP. Click that and a live tech support type will answer your questions. The author gratefully acknowleges that this document was adapted from an exellent one created by The University of Reading IT Services staff.
