Thanks to Pat Bentley for the following information! Please make sure to
put the January 11, 2006 Guidance meeting on your calendar.

Guidance at CCHS for Class of 2009

Hi. My name is Pat Bentley. My eldest daughter, Kathy, is a freshman at
CCHS. I am our class liaison to the Guidance office. My role is to remind
you of the Guidance activities that are pertinent to our 09 students.
Please understand that I am not a gate-keeper. You are always welcome to
contact your son or daughter's counselor directly by phone: 978-341-2490,
ext 7108 or 7109 or by email. The Guidance website has contact information
for individual counselors: www.colonial.net/guidance.

Key Guidance activities this year:
    * Each Freshman has met with his/her assigned Guidance Counselor
earlier this fall.
    * January 11, 2006  7:30pm - "Freshmen/Sophomore Parent Evening"
sponsored by the Guidance Department. PUT THIS ON YOUR CALENDAR. A CCHS
Guidance Counselor and CCHS School Adjustment Counselor will review the
timeline for the college planning process and provide us (the parents) with
suggestions on how to support our adolescents for a successful high school
experience.
    * February/March - Guidance Counselors meet with their students in
small group setting to review academic progress and to help students select
courses for the sophomore year.
  Key messages from Guidance
    * The most important thing we (parents) can do for our children during
their Freshman year at CCHS is to help them get anchored academically and
socially in the high school. Encourage them to focus on their class
work. Encourage them to sample different co-curricular activities.
    * The formal process for college and post-secondary planning begins in
the junior year. Prior to that the Guidance Office recommends that our
children think about their preferences and aptitudes and not focus on
"which college." Many children change direction frequently in the next
two years. We might as well wait and see where they are at the end of
their sophomore year and before we start planning for post-CCHS.
Resources for Parents (be sure you have both of these)

· Yellow "Guidance Department Handbook." You should have received
it at Back to School night. This is where you get the overview of Guidance
Programs and Services for all four years. If you need one, call Guidance.
· The Guidance Bulletin section within the CCHS Monthly Newsletter,
which is available to all parents by email and covers all the school
activities. This is the best and sometimes ONLY place to learn key
Guidance dates and activities.

Please feel free to contact your son or daughter's Guidance Counselor
should you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks
