Hello to all,

Attached and below you will find a message I am sending to homeroom
teachers to read to their homeroom students tomorrow morning. In addition
to the message to students I ask that parents speak to their own child and
help monitor their own child's activities. At CCHS we have been very
fortunate to have had no tragedies associated with substance use.
Regardless, it is always wise to encourage good decision making and
safety. One other issue I raise with certainty that there is someone
offended when I say it is the issue of adults in the community sponsoring
parties in which they serve alcohol to minors. I am fully aware of the
reasons why some feel this is OK, but I also know it is illegal and
carries potential liabilities. I know that folks who will tell me it is
none of my business what they do in their own home are absolutely correct.
Still, i encourage all the adults of the community to help make the proms
and end of year activities safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Thanks very much for all you do for CCHS. The quality of the school and
the quality of your child's experience is very much dependent on your
support.

The message to homerooms -

I am writing this message to the student body because we are entering the
prom and graduation season. The end of year events are meant to provide an
enjoyable and memorable experience. Students, parents, and teachers all
look forward to these events in anticipation of it being a great time for
everyone involved.

Unfortunately, the end of year events can sometimes become extremely
unpleasant or even devolve into a terrible tragedy. Obviously, I am
speaking of the propensity for some people to associate alcohol or drugs
with proms, after prom parties, or graduation ceremonies. I encourage all
students to make good decisions in this regard.

I have firm and fair expectations for those attending the proms. People
who violate the school rules regarding substance use will be subject to
all the penalties that apply. For most this involves suspension from
school, being banned form participation in sports and other activities,
and possibly expulsion, depending on the nature of the substance and the
details of the offense. For seniors, a violation of the substance rule
includes the above but also will likely result in being banned from senior
activities, which may mean not participating in graduation itself.

Aside from the school rules, the real issue is safety. People who are
under the influence of a substance pose a threat to themselves and others.
It is not OK for one person to spoil another’s activity by being
belligerent, argumentative, aggressive, or otherwise out of control. It is
not OK for any person to endanger others by driving while under the
influence. Beyond all school rules I constantly worry about students
making a bad decision that results in injury or death to themselves or
others. It is mostly for this reason I ask all students who plan to
attend the various end of year activities to have a great time, celebrate
your time in high school, enjoy the company of your friends, but please,
please, do not drink alcohol or take drugs in a misguided effort to
enhance an otherwise intrinsically enjoyable experience.

You are a wonderful group of students. I do not want to lose any of you
and I take no pleasure from having to discipline any of you. Thanks for
listening and thanks in advance for your cooperation.
