Hello to all,
It has come to my attention that some members of the CCHS community might
be confused in regards to facility improvements completed over the summer
and funding--through both capital and operating budgets. To set the record
straight, money approved at Town Meeting for renovation and repair of
lockers in the lower gym area has been invested to improve this area and
the most of the work was done over the summer. As a matter of fact, more
was done at the high school than originally anticipated.
The amount of work done during the past two months at the high school has
been pretty close to incredible It saddens me to hear that people who may
not know all the facts are suggesting either that academics and athletics
are at odds with each other in the competition for resources or that some
money may have been spent for purposes other than what was approved at
town meeting. Neither is the case.
The $535,000 FY05 Article 28 money budgeted $352K for the language lab
equipment replacement and $183K for renovation & repair of lockers in the
lower gym area and replacement of the lower gym floor, and upgrades to the
lighting in the lower gym. We spent $339.8K of the $352K on the language
lab, and spent $198K on the gym, lighting and lockers project to date,
the overrun is being absorbed within operating funds, and in addition to
we have also been able to spend $15K from operating funds on a new gym
divider net for the lower gym. The team rooms which are not yet complete.
Those materials have been ordered and we are awaiting installation from
the vendor later this week -- the team rooms are beyond the original scope
of renovations planned -- athletics actually received more than
originally planned.
I hope this helps clarify issues for anyone who may have heard otherwise
over the past few days. The information listed above comes to me from Dr.
Finn, our Superintendent, and John Flaherty, the Business Manager.
