+++++*PANEL ON TEEN SUBSTANCE ABUSE*+++++

Spring is nearly here and with spring comes end of the school year
parties, celebrations and proms. Our young people may seek to enhance
their involvement in these experiences by taking some form of
recreational substance (alcohol, marijuana, club drugs, heroin). On
*Monday, April 10, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the CCHS auditorium*, CCPI
and the Alliance for Teen Safety will present a talk on "Social Studies,
Chemistry and Guidance That Will Prevent Your Kids from Becoming
History." The talk will propose strategies for parents about teen
alcohol use, including how and why it's important to postpone and
intervene. Renee Soulis, a senior prevention specialist from FCD
Educational Services will present research about use and its effects on
teenage brains, the sequence of initiation into and progression of use,
and the social and cultural pressures students are likely to face at
CCHS and in college. She will offer strategies to parents for the
prevention, postponement, and intervention of use. Kathy Bowen, the CPS
and CCRSD K-12 Health Curriculum Specialist will present the incidence
of use in our towns as reported on the 2004 YRBS. Barbara Howland,
director of the Alliance for Teen Safety, will present some of the
community initiatives currently in place and those planned for our towns
to address use. Come join us for this important and informative evening.
Suggested donation $8/person, $15/couple.
