Hello to all,

I know many of you will be here tomorrow for the parent conferences and I
certainly hope the visit provides useful information to you. I know
teachers are preparing and excited for the opportunity to engage in these
discussions.

This message is to let you know that there is at least one thing
available to you tomorrow (aside from the conversation) that will not cost
you any money. I have two informational booklets published by the
Massachusetts Department of Public Health. One is titled "7 Ways to
Protect Your Teen from Alcohol and Other Drugs." The second is titled
"Preventing Substance Abuse Begins at Home". They are very short pamphlets
that offer concise information. I have ordered 1300 of each booklet (free)
and they will be available on a table outside the main office. Please take
one per family or per parent, if a joint custody situation. That way the
1300 should cover everyone with a few left over.

Most of you know I worry about risky behaviors teens will engage in. I
hope that the information contained in these small booklets will prove
useful to some of you. I always have to remind people that all research is
in agreement that the person in a teen's life who is most effective in
preventing risky and/or dangerous behavior is the teen's parent. This is
despite whatever reaction one might get when one takes the time to engage
the conversation.

Again, I hope the day proves useful to you. Perhaps we'll have an
opportunity to say hello.
