News from the CCHS Music Department
Marvin Hollis Jacobs, Maine artist and acquaintance of former CCHS science
teacher Wilson Flight, will be at CCHS on Thursday, December 21st, to
visit with faculty, students, and the public. He will also bring many of
his works (watercolors and acrylics) to sell to support the "Japan
Initiative", a new fund raising effort to provide financial support for
joint programs that have developed between Concord and Nanae, Hokkaido,
Japan. As the relationships between Concord and Nanae, and CCHS with
schools in Hokkaido, continue to broaden, financial support is needed to
support related activities. It is, however, important to recognize that
while indirectly associated the CCHS Concert Band's journeys to Japan and
their associated fund raisers, the Japan Initiative is its own entity and
funds raised will support a wide range of activities.
Mr. Jacobs will have a varied selection of art work available ranging from
small, intimate works (2" x 3"), to large paintings (3' x 3') suitable for
a focal point in any room. Each painting is matted and most are framed.
Prices range from $15 - 750. Fifty percent of all proceeds will go
directly to the Japan Initiative.
Mr Jacobs will be at CCHS from 3:00-5:00 in the afternoon on the 21st and
aslo from 6:30-9:30 in the evening. Please be advised that there is a
large holiday concert at CCHS that evening, so, if you'd like to shop and
don't have time to listen in on the concert (or don't wish to deal with
the traffic and the parking!), the afternoon time might be best for you!

The CCHS Concert Band has commissioned an original arrangement for band
and will present the world premier of "The Symphonic Les Miserables: Six
Scenes From Act I" at its annual holiday concert this Thursday evening.
The concert will be held at the CCHS auditorium, will start at 7:30PM, and
is free and open to the public. The band has commissioned Peter Hazzard,
teacher at Lawrence Academy, former teacher at Berklee College of Music,
and world renowned composer and arranger to create a new arrangement, a
symphonic treatment, of Claude-Michel Schonberg's emotional music from the
first act of the epic musical. Included in this arrangement are
renderings of several selections from the musical that have not been
previously arranged for band such as "Castle in the Clouds", "Stars" and
the "Finale From Act I". The Concert Band will bring this new arrangement
with them on their journey to Japan in April where it will receive its
international premier. Mr. Hazzard will accompany the band on its trip as
its "Composer in Residence". He will meet with Japanese educators,
students and composers, furthering the sharing of cultures through the
international language of music.
Thursday evening's concert will also feature the CCHS Repertory Band and
both Jazz Bands "A" and "B". In addition to the premier, audience members
will be treated to holiday favorites such as "The Nutcracker" and "Sleigh
Ride" I hope to see many of you there.
