[CCHS] a staff concern

Good morning,

I am writing this message to pass along a concern expressed within the
past two days by several staff members.

Some staff members are concerned about the dress of some of our students
over the past few very warm days. This is definitely always an issue in
every school. At CCHS we have a reasonable dress code (Section 7, page 1
of the Handbook for Students and Parents). Some of the wording of the
dress code includes "within reasonable bounds of modesty" and "not
disruptive to the educational process". Without doubt these are concepts
requiring interpretation which can certainly lead reasonable people to
different conclusions. I am not interested in placing myself into a
quagmire of disciplinary referrals. I am definitely not interested in
getting into the business of measuring the length of shorts or skirts, or
measuring necklines, etc. I do firmly believe that your child's mode of
dress is clearly more in your jurisdiction than mine. On the other hand I
want to respect the concerns of the staff, some of whom do believe there
is sometimes a disruption to the educational process due to a lack of
modesty. I am compelled to support the policy. To that end I have
authorized the school nurse to speak to the individual students if a
concern is raised about a particular mode of dress being immodest or
potentially disruptive. If she does so, you will be informed by someone,
most likely myself or an Assistant Principal, as a courtesy. These
instances will not be treated a a disciplinary situation, but as a
reminder for what we think are reasonable expectations.

In the meantime I ask that you inform your child that teachers have
expressed concern. I also ask that you work with your child so that they
can make reasonable decisions with relation to this issue. thanks for
whatever help you might offer.
