Emerson Hospital physician presents lecture on concussions

CONCORD, Mass., November 13, 2007–
Dr. Robert Cantu, chair of the department of surgery, chief of
neurosurgery and director of sports medicine at Emerson Hospital, will
present a lecture on concussions, titled “More Than Just a Bump on the
Head.” The lecture will take place on Wednesday, November 28, at 7:30 pm
in the Concord-Carlisle High School auditorium.

At the lecture, attendees will learn about the many symptoms of
concussions (headache, double or fuzzy vision, fatigue and memory
problems, among others). Dr. Cantu will discuss why anyone exhibiting any
of these symptoms should be removed from play and immediately examined by
a physician. Attendees will also learn from the experience of James
Orrigo, a high school junior who suffered a sports concussion and
prolonged post-concussion syndrome.

Dr. Cantu is a national expert on concussions. In addition to his role at
Emerson, he is co-director of the Neurologic Sports Injury Center at
Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and he serves as medical director of the
National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research in North Carolina.
He is also a consultant to the Boston Cannons professional lacrosse team
and the Boston Eagles football team.
