Summer Design Challenge
Engineering and Science for Girls and Boys ages 13 to 16
The Concord Education Fund and Concord-Carlisle Adult & Community
Education have teamed up
with the Museum of Science National Center for Technological Literacy
(NCTL) and WGBH
Design Squad to offer a fun, challenging, summer engineering and science
experience for middle and
high school students. Hooked on Science welcomes curious minded young
adults to join this exciting
team-based, hands-on workshop. All programs take place at Concord-Carlisle
High School.
* Tackle new skills, thrills, and spills in a summer toboggan.
* Learn to control vehicle forces: thrust, drag, lift, weight.
* Investigate physics on rides at Canobie Lake Park.
* Build a water-worthy cardboard canoe.
* Master buoyancy, flotation, material strength, and saturation.
* Fabricate and race a cardboard canoe on the Concord River.
* Take a day-long canoe trip on the Ipswich river.
* Examine big bugs and become an amateur entomologist.
* Design, sculpt, and display giant insect statues.
* Scavenge the natural environment for artistic inspiration.
* Visit Franklin Park Zoo and the Museum of Science.
Fees:
Tuition for each session is $600 and
includes a boxed lunch, a field trip with
transportation, and all materials.
Scholarships are available based on need
and availability.

The Program:
* Modeled after the WGBH Design Squad TV series.
* Learn practical science; master technical challenges.
* Transform raw materials into full-scale inventions.
* Go on fun field trips to relevant places.
* Choose from three, one-week, full-day sessions.
The Faculty Team:
* Led by Doug Shattuck, Engineer and Applied Technology
teacher at Concord Middle School.
* Assisted by Sharon Staggers-Moss and other
science/technology educators.
